VW Golf 8 tuning project
We do what VW wasn't allowed to do: Golf 8 with over 700 PS!
The VW Golf has not only been the icon among compact cars for decades, it is also one of our favorite tuning projects. With each Golf generation, we break world records and redefine the rules of performance enhancement on our test bench. The Golf 8 is no exception. We were the first to take on the challenge and put fire under the brand-new Golf.
Here you get an exclusive look behind the scenes of our pioneering work and learn how we turn the Golf 8 R and Golf 8 GTI into the most powerful compact sports cars in the world. On the way to the BAT-TEK standard 1000 hp, we have so far achieved over 700 hp in the Golf 8 R. But that's not the end of it! As always, we measure our success against previous models and increase our skills and performance with each vehicle.

Information on the Golf 8 R and Golf 8 GTI
The starting position: the engine in the Golf 8 R and Golf 8 GTI
At the heart of both vehicles is the EA888 2.0 TSI evo4, an in-line four-cylinder engine with turbocharging. It is one of the Group's most modern engines and is already renowned for its high stability, efficient direct injection and, of course, the enormous tuning potential that we love so much. The Golf 8 R delivers a powerful 333 hp (245 kW) and 420 Nm as standard; the GTI has 245 hp (180 kW) and a torque of 370 Nm. In contrast to the GTI, the Golf 8 R has all-wheel drive to ensure better power transmission.
Also in terms of cooling the GTI has to make do with the smaller system, which is sufficient for its standard performance, but very quickly reaches its limits with increased power. Cooling and exhaust routing on the Golf 8 R are more robust, but of course also need to be upgraded from a certain performance level. The more powerful Golf also comes with the more powerful transmission, which is why you will only find the Golf 8 R with a 7-speed DSG, which is designed for higher torques. The Golf 8 GTI, on the other hand, comes with either a manual gearbox or DSG.
Turbocharger and turbocharging for Golf 8 GTI and Golf 8 R
The two also differ in terms of turbocharger: the GTI is fitted with a smaller Garrett turbo, whose strength lies in its early pressure build-up and fast response behaviour. It is a lot of fun in everyday use, but reaches its limits more quickly when it comes to increasing performance . In the eighth-generation Golf R, a larger turbocharger from Continental ensures higher peak power, but has the disadvantage that the response behaviour is slightly delayed in the lower rev range. Nevertheless, the Golf 8 R with its turbocharger offers a great starting point for ambitious tuners, as it has significantly more reserves.
Revolutionary development: The first upgrade turbocharger for Golf 8 GTI and R together with Garrett
As pioneers in motorsport, we wanted to develop the world's first upgrade turbocharger for the Golf 8 . Bartek itself describes turbocharger as the supreme discipline of performance enhancement, because the entire performance of a vehicle stands and falls with turbocharging. That is why we were the first in the world to test, apply and co-develop upgrade- turbocharger on both vehicles (the Golf 8 GTI and Golf 8 R) together with Garrett, one of the most renowned manufacturers of turbochargers. Night-long wrenching sessions on the test bench and our years of experience in the design of high-performance turbochargers were necessary to develop the Garrett PowerMax (Stage 1) turbocharger. As always, our goal was to make even more Power possible, which is why we subsequently developed stage 2 and even stage 3 turbocharger for the Golf 8 R.
First world record broken: Over 600 hp in the Golf 8
After we developed the first turbocharger, the first world record for our Golf 8 quickly followed: we were able to break the 600- hp mark! Because the original periphery, the pumps etc., could not meet the demand for fuel, we helped out with water methanol and ethanol injection. We also needed a second gallery so that there were two nozzles per cylinder. We also had to completely reprogramme the launch control in conjunction with the DSG and the large turbocharger.
We also installed the following parts from BAR-TEK® installed:
- Intake
- Upgrade turbocharger Thor 600
- Intercooler
- Boost pressure pipework
- Spark plugs and ignition coils
- Exhaust system
- Upgrade- fuel pump in the tank
- Oil cooler
- Forged pistons and steel connecting rods
- ARP stud bolt
- Larger valves at cylinder head (inlet and outlet)
- Reinforced upgrade- clutch
For a detailed list of the parts installed, you should definitely read our Tuning guide for 2.0 EA888 evo4 engines for more information.
720 hp cracked: Next world record from BAR-TEK®
After we built the engine identically to our Golf 7 reinforced (connecting rods and co), we broke the next world record at the beginning of 2025 when we achieved 720 hp and 740 Nm with our Golf 8 R. For this, we modified the fuel system so that we could inject more fuel. In the process, we also found faults in the standard engine; plastic water pipes on the cylinder head could not cope with the enormous power and broke away and the water pump broke. We then replaced the inferior plastic parts with our components, which are made from solid aluminium and can also withstand the Power. Another major obstacle on the way to our record was the software. As with every new model, the manufacturer does everything it can to ensure that we get into the system as late as possible in order to develop it further. But that has never stopped us from doing pioneering work and pushing ahead with revolutionary developments.
Time chasing and data measurement with the Golf 8
We like to show what our Golf 8 can do by chasing times on various racetracks, including the L8 Night, or at our specially rented airport, where we test everything we can. Our test bench also brings all the figures to light. In this video, Bartek shows how much Power is in our Golf 8 and also compares the values of our turbocharger with those of the Garret PMax Stage 1 charger.
You don't need 700 hp but want to get more out of your Golf 8 R?
In our tuning guide, you can find out exactly which parts you need to get more out of your Golf 8 R. Because even if the racetrack doesn't appeal to you, you can still have a lot more fun with your Golf when it's road-legal. In addition to the parts you need, you can also get tips on tuning your Golf 8 R here!
