Piston coating
Piston coating: less heat and more durability
The pistons are among the most important parts of your engine and are also exposed to the most severe stresses. Heat is a particular problem for pistons, and this is precisely why piston coatings are available.
Especially at high performance, in racing and ambitious tuning, the coating protects the pistons from heat and makes them more durable. Here you can learn everything about the piston coating of JE Pistons and Mahle.
Piston coating for JE and MAHLE pistons
Your pistons are constantly exposed to varying loads. These include above all heat and pressure as internal factors and various external factors such as climate, engine oil used and fuel. To make your pistons more resistant to these influences, you can get specially coated pistons from us by JE Pistons and MAHLE.
By coating the pistons, heat can be reduced and dissipated significantly better. The service life of your pistons increases enormously. The need for piston crown cooling is also reduced by the coating. The coating prevents power loss and allows you to fully enjoy your hp.
In addition to the positive effects on performance increase, there are also advantages for the environment: Emission rates decrease with the help of the coating, because the higher exhaust gas temperature ensures faster heating of the exhaust aftertreatment after a cold start.
All advantages of piston coating at a glance
- Protection against heat
- Dissipation of heat into the combustion chamber
- Increased service life of the pistons
- Improved emergency running properties
- Less friction and wear of the cylinder bore
- Improved sliding properties
- Prevents piston slap during cold start
- Lower oil consumption
- Prevents engine knocking
Piston coating from JE Pistons
JE Pistons currently still offers, as an option to their forged piston, a coating of the piston crown and piston skirt. Soon, JE will also offer exclusively coated pistons. Coating the piston crown protects the piston from increased heat absorption, as it reflects the heat and returns it to the combustion chamber. The ceramic spray coating is baked onto the piston crown. It also extends the service life of the components and can handle extreme heat and the highest power levels.
Coating the piston skirt from JE Pistons (“Perfect Skirt Coating”) results in less friction in the cylinder and improved sliding and emergency running properties. It adapts to the bore size and thus ensures a much tighter clearance. In addition, you have more safety during cold starts, completely without piston slap.
The delivery time for the coating is approx. 3–4 weeks. The price is per piston. We only offer the coating in combination with a new piston set from JE Pistons.
In this video you can find out more about what the different piston coatings from JE Pistons look like and how they work:
Piston crown coating from MAHLE pistons
MAHLE has also developed a special coating for its pistons: the MAHLE GRAFAL® anti-friction coating, which is applied to the piston skirts using a screen-printing process. It reduces air resistance, abrasion, wear and noise. MAHLE pistons are also provided with a grey phosphate layer, a dry film lubricant that protects the pin bore of the piston from seizing and the ring groove from micro-welding.
In this video, the piston coatings from MAHLE are explained:
