Supra – the most famous sports car from Toyota
With the name of this sports car, Toyota has already made a statement: Supra is the Latin word for ‘beyond’, ‘more’, and ‘further’. With its history, the car has long grown into its name. The Toyota Supra is the manufacturer’s most well-known sports car and stands for pure driving thrills. It was presented for the first time in 1970 and has been being produced and marketed as the Celica Supra since 1978. To mark its 50th anniversary, the Supra is meant to be relaunched – but even faster, more beautiful, and more passionate. The motto and the sole task of the developer team was ‘Condensed Extreme Design’. The pros from Toyota have outdone themselves and even surpassed this goal. The Supra comes with a 6-cylinder front engine and rear-wheel drive – a very rare combo nowadays. The look is powerful and modern, and it combines the flowing romantic lines of racing with a broad, refined appearance: with a long bonnet, double bubble roof, and compact bodywork. These characteristics can be consistently found throughout the entire history of the sports car legend. The mix appeals to racing fans and makes our hearts beat faster.
The performance of the Toyota GR Supra
Of course, looks aren’t everything and we don’t want to withhold the outstanding technical features of the Toyota Supra. Here as well, Toyota has outdone itself and is collaborating with the pros from BMW. A recurring feature of the Supra is the combination of a 3.0L 6-cylinder in-line engine and rear-wheel drive. This engine is charged by a twin-scroll turbocharger and easily cranks out 340 hp (250 kW) and a hefty torque of 500 Nm. Combined with high-precision direct injection and variable valve control, this engine delivers incredible driving dynamics. From zero to one hundred km/h in 4.3 seconds, there’s no shortage of driving thrills. That’s thanks to the Supra’s launch control. The acceleration is powerful and balanced, the engine really purrs and you won’t be able to get that smile off your face. The smooth driving dynamics and maximum speed of 250 km/h also help to give you that perfect racing sport feeling in this popular sports car.
A racing sport feeling with safety
With the eight-speed automatic gear-changer in the new Supra, you can delight in extremely fast gear-shifting. The transmission ratio in the lower gears is short and the stability in the limit range is improved through the active differential. This also applies to the grip when cornering and braking. The high-performance brakes come with four Brembo callipers each and are thus perfectly suited if you want to enjoy the Supra’s full potential. The package is topped off by forged, 19-inch alloy wheels.
Breathtaking sound
The new GR Supra features an active sound design and two different driving modes. In everyday traffic, you use the normal mode. In sport mode, you experience an unmistakable racing feeling thanks to the high tones when downshifting and the characteristic rumbling and growling of a sports car. And the modes regulate more than the sound. They also enable you to control the engine’s response characteristics, steering, damper settings, shifting pattern, and differential power. Depending on your mood, you can also activate the racing setting in sport mode. This reduces the stability system for an even more authentic racing feeling.
Toyota Gazoo Racing played a part
In order to help the new Supra achieve its enormous performance, the racing experts from Toyota, the Gazoo Racing team, helped with the coordination work. Simply everything about this sports car is aerodynamically optimised: from the underbody to the roof. Air guides on the floor of the car improve road grip at high speeds, so that you can step on the gas carefree. The weight ratio is also perfect (50:50) between the engine area and rear area. A particularly lightweight but extremely rigid frame made of aluminium and steel ensures the body’s rigidity. Thanks to the reduced weight through various aluminium components, you are virtually glued to the road through the secure grip. The Supra is optimally balanced in any situation. As a driver, you completely take centre stage: the design is modelled after a single-seat race car. With the head-up display, you also keep your eye on all important parameters perfectly while driving.
Agile and precise – The Golden Ratio

The GR Supra is meant to be agile, have great stability, and be as powerful as never before. To meet these requirements, it has been designed according to the golden ratio: The Supra’s ratio between its wheelbase length and contact surface width – at 1.55 – lies optimally in the range between 1.5 and 1.6. Thanks to its low centre of gravity and lightweight components, the Supra achieves very special manoeuvrability, while retaining great stability at the same time. This is also ensured through the car’s optimum balance. With unlimited grip, your driving experience and fun also know no bounds.
Conclusion
We can hardly wait to have this magnificent specimen of a sports car at our test facility. After 10 years in Formula 1 at Toyota, BAR-TEK would like to return to its roots and get even more performance out of the Supra. With its optimised design, however, the bar has been placed high. With the new GR Supra, Toyota has reached a new level that is really fun.
